Like many small business owners, co-founders and sisters Jodie Stewart and Tammie Phillips had career aspirations to one day run their own business. About Life started out of a need, a quest for better. Both sisters had corporate jobs in sales and marketing within the hotel industry which involved a lot of travel, jet lag, and food choices based on convenience. They knew their bodies needed to be fuelled but didn’t really understand how to get the best from what they ate.
As part of their travels, both Jodie and Tammie lived in Japan and loved the delicious diet there. That is when they first started to genuinely comprehend the relationship between nutritious food and longevity and quality of life. They also experienced the relatively new idea of the wholefood store and started thinking about how they could take this concept back to Australia, not just as a café but as a whole new way of eating, a genuine alternative to the traditional supermarkets. And so About Life was born.
In the Beginning
The business began in 1996 in a small shop of 100 square metres at 600 Darling Street, Rozelle – immediately across the road from the current Rozelle store. Right from the outset the food focus was on ‘organic’ and ‘chemical free’ products. Jodie and Tammie view chemicals and food as unnatural partners. This is the founding principle of the About Life business.
The first shop was built around a wholefoods cafe with a packaged organic grocery and a naturopathic section which provided professional advice on lifestyle ailments and recommended supplements, aids to nutrition and natural remedies. By 1997 they had introduced a catering element to the business and were on the road to success.
It was 9 years before the business outgrew the original store. By 2005 there was a growing demand for organics and the About Life business moved across the street to 605 Darling Street, Rozelle. This is where you will find us today.
By 2008 the About Life brand was in hot demand. Customers were coming from all over Sydney to shop in the Rozelle store and many asked when they would open more stores elsewhere in Sydney.
June 2009 – After loads of requests from customers all over Sydney, we finally open a second store in Bondi Junction, to the delight of all our Eastern Suburbs customers.
November 2012 – Our third store is constructed in Cammeray. North Sydney customers are quick to find the store and in no time it’s a hit!
June 2014 – Our biggest store so far opens in Double Bay. The first store to offer our Nature’s Servery self-serve food bar concept and with so much success it was rolled out in all stores.
October 2014 – We open in trendy Surry Hills. The store was an instant hit with busy professionals and health conscience locals.
March 2016 – Lane Cove is the first of three new stores for 2016. Locals love the concept from the new fresh meat and deli lines, in-store demos and ready-made meals.
April 2016 – About Life goes interstate! A new store in the beach side suburb of Port Melbourne opens.
June 2016 – Crows Nest, our youngest one, now cements our commitment to the north side of Sydney.
What’s next? That’s our little secret…. but we can tell you it’s going to be filled with the very best, wholesome food we can find.
